Remember when The Craft came out and being a witch was suddenly cool? Well, apparently a few people never grew out of that phase. There’s an entire community of real-life witches living in the good ol’ US of A, and they are none too happy about the portrayal of their community on True Blood.
"I'm absolutely disappointed with the portrayal of Marnie," says Taarna RavenHawk, a witch/college professor, "When Marnie gives up her 'power within,' which is a witch's ability to practice the craft without harming others, it allows possession by Antonia who becomes the controlling entity. Marnie lets it happen. It's unconscionable a witch would act this way."
Elaanie Stormbender, a witch from Jackson, Mississippi, adds, "When witches invoke a spirit, they take precautions and retain full control to banish. Marnie didn't stay in control, so she's entirely to blame for giving herself over to being possessed."
While Marnie may be taking witchcraft to dangerous levels, it’s important to remember that she’s a villainous and flawed character, and isn’t supposed to be representative of a broader community of witches. But some real-life witches are concerned about the negative impact Marnie will have on their community.
"Since the new season of True Blood began, I've seen an increase in new members who are in their teens and may be easily impressed by Marnie's display of power," RavenHawk says. "It's dangerous when viewers think witchcraft, as Marnie does it, is so easy. For this reason she's a bad example."
In the future, we’ll remember that it’s not as easy as it looks to bring your pet parrot back from the dead.
